CULTURE POSTER SERIES
OVERVIEW
The Culture Poster Series is a collection of three posters based on the definition of the word “culture”. This body of work also seeked to introduce the process of working within a set of “guidelines” in order to make the set of posters feel cohesive.
Given a list of words to choose from for this exercise, I chose the word culture as I felt it resonated with me the most at the time.
THE PROCESS
During the initial stages of this project, defining the word culture played a crucial role in setting the starting point. The main definition of the word culture can be described as ‘a set of shared beliefs or customs between groups of people’. However, a second definition of culture can be seen as growing or nurturing something, cultivating.
DEFINING THE WORD
With these definitions in mind I set off to conceptualize a variety of sketches that could relate to culture. The very first sketches explored a diverse catalog of representing culture whether it be metaphorical, symbolic, or poetic.
After examining these sketches, I decided on the three routes I wanted to investigate further:
DANCE
Dance as a universal language, movement as a form of communication
Cultural significance of dance to a variety of groups
THE INTERNET
Major cultural phenomenon
The ability to connect with anyone around the world who has access to the internet
Hivemind mentality, the positives, negatives, and overwhelming role of the internet
FLOWERS
Significance of flowers and their symbolism in a variety of cultures
Cultivation, growing, or nurturing
Roots that tie us together, something shared
CREATING THE PICTURE
REFINING THE LOOK
After deciding on the three routes I wanted to pursue, the final challenge was constructing a “look” to create a set.
For this poster series I decided to limit the amount of colors used within the set. Warm colors with the addition of shades of black and white make up the color palette for this series.
Additionally, each poster utilizes a combination of photo and vector images. The lines of color that appear in each poster work to highlight how culture connects.
With these guidelines in mind, I worked to create variations of the three posters, ultimately resulting in the set showcased at the beginning of this page.
